Welcome to Place des Vosges, a true gem in the heart of Paris. Nestled in the Marais district, this square is a perfect blend of history, architecture, and tranquility.
Place des Vosges, originally known as Place Royale, was built by Henry IV from 1605 to 1612. It's the oldest planned square in Paris and a fine example of 17th-century architecture. The square was renamed after the French Revolution to honor the Vosges department, the first to pay taxes to the new French Republic.
The square is a perfect symmetrical square, measuring 140 meters on each side. It's surrounded by 36 red-brick and stone houses, all identical, with steep slate roofs. The ground floors, once home to shops, now host art galleries and cafes.
Place des Vosges is not just a beautiful square. It's a cultural hub. The house where famous French writer Victor Hugo lived from 1832 to 1848 is now a museum. The square has also been a source of inspiration for many artists and writers.
Take a leisurely stroll around the square, admire the elegant facades, and soak in the atmosphere. Enjoy a picnic in the central park, surrounded by beautiful linden and chestnut trees. Discover the art galleries, cafes, and the Victor Hugo Museum. Place des Vosges is a place to relax, to appreciate history, and to be inspired.
